New Agenda on Sunday. is out! Edition of 30 October 2016

Good morning everyone.

Regular readers will probably be aware that I have an intense aversion to this bizarre ritual of tampering with the clocks. It happened again last night, when at the appointed moment, all the clocks in the land (including our house) were put back by 1 hour to revert to GMT. I do not have a problem in March when sanity returns and we reinstate BST, but the October absurdity causes me, and I am sure thousands of others around the UK, a complete disruption of physical routines and sleep patterns. Last night was no exception. For some unknown reason I woke thinking that it was early morning. It was not. A glance at the bedside clock confirmed that the tinkering had taken place and it was only 12:06. After a period of tossing and turning, I eventually went back to sleep.
When my body clock woke me I assumed that it was sometime between 04:00 and 05:00, which is the usual starting time for my day. After a few moments of motivating myself to move, I rose without even bothering to check the clock.
On arriving in the kitchen, I was stunned to see that the kitchen clock was showing 03:09! We have another five months of this to endure added to the dark at 3 45pm, the almost sinister mist and fog, and the cold and frosty mornings. The only "bright spot" to look forward to is Christmas. I am not and never have been a "winter person" and eagerly await the night when BST is restored. When that happens on Sunday 26th March 2017 (which is, incidentally Mother's Day) may the "powers that be" decree that BST is the set time for the UK and that no further meddling with the clocks will be necessary.

Next Saturday it will be November 5th or Guy Fawkes as it is known. Personally, I would ban the sale of fireworks in shops and supermarkets and only legitimate display organisation would be allowed to obtain or posses them. This has been my view for many years, but it seems that this country is prepared to accept injury (or worse) to people, usually children and to animals for the dubious "pleasure" of a few minutes watching very expensive fireworks from ASDA or where ever, disappear in clouds of coloured smoke, (We would also be spared the nightly bangs, whizzes and other assorted noises which seem to start around 2 weeks before the 5th November and continue for some time following "Bonfire night" itself)

The film "I, Daniel Blake" from Ken Loach seems to be causing some discomfort, particularly in government circles. Channel 4 News had Ken Loach and government minister Kwasi Kwarteng discussing the film and its implications. You can read my observations on the interview on http://new-agenda2012.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/you-are-party-government-of-food-banks.html?spref=tw and the full story in New Agenda on Sunday,

The "weather pundits" are still warning of cold to come. Meanwhile it remains mild enough to have stopped, temporarily at least, using our heaters.

Have a nice week

The absurdity of tampering with "Time"

The Clocks were put back by 1 hour last night. Did you remember?

Benefit sanctions are an abuse inflicted by government as punishment.

Benefit sanctions forcing people to use food banks, study confirms

Yet another "study" to report a truth which many of us have known for years!

Benefit sanctions, whereby social security claimants have their payments stopped for at least a month as a punishment for supposedly breaching strict job centre rules, are a key driver of hunger and food bank use"

This conservative government and the ConDem coalition before them, use benefit sanctions, (most of which are overturned on appeal, but by which time the damage has already been done), as a weapon to attack the poor and most vulnerable people in our society and this abuse by government continues on a daily basis today.
Abuses of this severity in application and effect, would not be tolerated in any other part of our social system and any person or persons guilty of perpetrating such abuse would be subject to the severest of penalties available under law.
However, since Iain Duncan-Smith introduced this injustice, he and successive DWP Ministers since him, in collusion with a repressive government, have inflicted this punishment on benefit claimants around the country and have avoided any accountability for their actions .

A scene from Ken Loach's film I, Daniel Blake,

There is ample evidence that the use of this punishment has led to suicides of some or severe health problems in others, which in itself is a reason to condemn the use of sanctions, and those responsible for implementing them as barbaric and obscene.
There is a compelling argument for bringing charges against those responsible for imposing this punishment as we would bring charges against any other abusers in our society.

"You are the party, the government of Food-banks".

Ken Loach and Kwasi Kwarteng on Channel 4 News

There are many patronising, uncaring and ignorant Tories filling the conservative benches in the Commons and many more to be found in their constituency clubs and tea rooms around the country. Kwasi Kwarteng is just one. The refusal to accept the reality of "Food-bank Britain", he dismisses with the comment, "I think there is some hardship" followed by "Ken is just telling a story" and then draws a comparison with other writers who have commented on social injustices for many years.
Patronising, uncaring and ignorant Kwarteng resorts to the now well worn distortion that the conservatives have won a mandate from the British people in an election where the increasing use of Food-banks (by people driven to desperation by welfare cuts and sanctions incidentally) was a main issue in the Labour party campaign, and Labour lost that argument.
This distortion is an insult to all those people who's lives have already been ruined by this wretched government and all those who face the hardships of cuts and sanctions created by Kwarteng and his supporters in government and around the country on a daily basis week in and week out.

In the period of time that this despicable government has been in power they have inflicted hardship and desperation on people around the country and Kwarteng epitomizes their arrogance and indifference. We must drive this deplorable government from office at the earliest possible opportunity, and reverse their pernicious policies which exploit the many for the benefit of the few. We in the Labour parry must unite and take the fight to the Tories in the constituencies, in the work place, in Council chambers and on the streets and expose these patronising, uncaring and ignorant Tories and the irreparable damage they are wreaking upon our people and upon our country.

Good morning everyone.

"Alan Turing's law", is a long overdue piece of legislation which has taken 64 years to almost reach the statute books, for government to acknowledge the gross injustice of convictions and punishments handed down to Turing and others, under the Criminal law amendment act of 1885. On Friday (21st October) Sam Gyimah the Conservative MP for East Surrey and government minister filibustered his own legislation to "talk out" the amendments to the Policing and Crime bill which would have introduced this reform.

Sam Gyimah is a reprehensible and unprincipled example of an MP bringing the whole House into disrepute. The whole story is in today’s paper under the headings "Policing and Crime bill to incorporate "Alan Turing law" and "Sam Gyimah MP, filibusters his own legislation to introduce "Alan Turing's law".

While on the subject of "Strictly Come Dancing" (again) Brendan Cole has been struck down with a "lung infection" which has prevented him from appearing on the show. Reports of his "death" appearing in some sections of the social media are greatly exaggerated. The 40-year-old dancer said that he was "horrified & bemused" by the report.

Ed Balls in Strictly Come Dancing

Ed Balls, one of the "Celeb" (?) contestants on the show, has problems other than being, (according to many critics, viewers, and assorted other opinions) consistently the worst dancer by far and who should have been eliminated weeks ago, has more troubles to add to his difficulties. It seems that Ed is being left out by the younger contestants who go off to Camden or Central London when the show or rehearsals have finished at around 11:00 pm while the "older" contestants wander off home for their Cocoa drinking chocolate and their pyjamas. Poor old Ed has to be up early in the mornings.

The NHS is crumbling under the weight of chronic disease. This is largely driven by diet and lifestyle factors.
A Video featuring Dr Chatterrjee is on:-

As well as lifestyle, we should also be looking at the amount of preservatives, additives and other assorted "nasties" that manufactures pump into all sorts of food. We can choose what to eat and drink, but we have no control over what the manufactures and producers augment them with. Legislation is implemented to control sugar and salt content of food and we should work towards legislation to control food additives.

Even the American people are at a loss to understand

On Tuesday November 8th, less than 16 days from now, the American people will go into their polling booth's and place their "x" or whatever other method of showing their preference may be in operation in their particular State, for the next President of the United States. Of the 6 candidates in the poll, it is almost certain that either Trump with the strange coiffure, stranger finger gestures and questionable past, or Clinton with the manic facial contortions, shrill almost hysterical rantings, and questionable past, will become the next person who the American Secret Service refer to as POTUS. At least after November 8th, we shall be spared the endless coverage of the "Presidential Campaign" which seems to have be going on for the last 12 months, and the appalling slanging matches labelled "Presidential Debates", (which I hasten to add I have only seen on the News Channels as that is the predominant news they seem to report) so favoured by Sky News and "their sister Channel Fox News". The thing that I am totally at a loss to understand, is how from a nation of some 320 million people, these two unstable politicians have emerged as the only choices for the role of "Leaders of the Free World". The xenophobic sex predator, or the belligerent interventionist, give a whole new meaning to the words "what an appalling choice".

It is cold, but it is getting warmer or maybe not depending on which television channel you may be watching and whether their seaweed is more accurate than the oppositions seaweed.

Have a nice week

1,640,000 people are going hungry because they cannot afford to "heat and eat"

Four in 10 social housing tenants forced to skip meals

The 21st Century, in the United Kingdom. Today in Theresa May's conservative controlled Great Britain, four in 10 social housing tenants are forced to skip meals because they can't afford to eat. The most recent figures reveal that around 4.1 million people live in "social housing" in this country, which means that more than 1,640,000 people men, women and children are going hungry because they cannot afford to "heat and eat" especially during the winter months, due to lack of finance. This situation has resulted in the huge rise in the number of people becoming reliant on Food-banks and other charities a number of people which now exceeds one million. This situation is particularly difficult for those in our society who are by reason of age or sickness or both, or those too young to fend for themselves, in the most vulnerable position and consequently likely to more effected by the lack of food and adequate warmth.

Image result for heat or eat

Before the usual suspects with their bigoted opinions and warped views of reality, leap onto the bandwagon of hostility and derision with, "they should cut out their cigarettes and booze", or "they should send back the 51inch Plasma TV", or "they should learn how to manage their money" and other contemptuous remarks, I would make one thing perfectly clear. By far, the vast majority of the 1,640,000 people in the position of being forced to choose between heating or eating, are not there from choice. They are in that position because they are the victims of a system which allows such circumstances to arise and tolerates that situation to continue. They are the victims of successive governments since the turn of this century, which have abdicated responsibility towards large sections of our society and allowed greed and self interests to flourish particularly in the provision of energy, housing and public services. Over the past 10 years, the country has been subjected to increasing levels of austerity which has inversely affected society to such an extent that the top 10% are now even richer than they were only 5 years ago, whilst everyone else has had their living standards reduced.
We must drive this wretched government from office at the earliest possible opportunity, and reverse their pernicious policies which exploit the many for the benefit of the few. We must create a society where poverty is eliminated, where people are not forced into Food-banks to provide for their families or where people are faced with the stark choice of eat or heat. We must ensure that in the remaining years of this century, we create a society where no section is left behind and where we all share in the wealth of this nation and all its people. It is a mammoth task which we face, and we must start today to bring about the changes which will be necessary.
