Paddy Ashdown, the former Liberal Democrat leader, has made an impassioned plea for party members to avoid "short-term personal manoeuvring" and to stand by Nick Clegg after the first open revolt against his leadership.

Loyalty may be admirable but this is really pushing it to the boundaries. Urging party members to avoid "short-term personal manoeuvring" and to stand by Nick Clegg demonstrates a remarkable lack of judgement and brings into question Ashdown's grasp of political reality. Clegg is a liar, hypocrite and self seeking individual who has prostituted every principle the Liberal democrats may have once had.
